WORK / CASE STUDY / Place-based products
Garrett County Adventures
A Garrett County trip-planning website combining local guides, an interactive map, trail data, and browser-local GPX analysis.
01 / THE PROBLEM
What needed to be better?
Regional visitors need more than a static list of destinations when planning hikes and outings in one area.
Built for: People exploring Garrett County, Maryland, and reviewing route information before visiting.
02 / APPROACH
How the project works.
Combine curated local places and guides with map-based browsing.
Provide terrain and trail views alongside a local GPX analysis workflow.
Support saved content and partial offline use while explaining which data still requires a connection.
03 / ENGINEERING
Decisions and tradeoffs.
Key decisions
- Use TypeScript, HTML, and CSS for an accessible interface, Mapbox GL JS for maps, and Rust/WASM for local GPX distance and elevation work.
- Keep imported GPX files in the browser rather than uploading them.
- Separate map tiles and live trail refreshes from offline-capable content.
Constraints acknowledged
- Mapbox maps and live updates depend on connectivity and a configured public token.
- OpenStreetMap trail snapshots are community mapping, not verified advice about access or conditions.
04 / EVIDENCE
What we can verify.
A working regional trip-planning product with a map explorer and local route-analysis workflow. No visitor growth or client revenue is claimed.
- The README documents the curated places, Mapbox terrain, offline limitations, OpenStreetMap snapshot, and GPX capabilities.
- The project repository supplies technical setup and documentation for reviewing the implementation.
